Undefeated teams battle in Men's Softball

Another week of rainy weather forced more cancellations for Rome Men's Softball. The league and its members are considering different options to makeup the rainouts. One option includes teams playing double-headers in upcoming weeks.

Week two for Rome Men's Softball saw the Thursday night games steal the stage, as Sunday and Monday night games were cancelled by consecutive rainouts. Those games will be made up on July 24th and 25th, respectively.

The RMSA season entered the final stages of the 2010 season this week with week nine and ten games filling the schedule. The top tier teams continued their winning ways, while those battling for the automatic tournament bids continued knocking each other around.

Week 10 play featured two marquee matchups. In the Monday Burt Smith League, undefeated Performance Wire faced Black River Ale House/D&D Carpets, while in the Thursday Jim Korpela League, a battle of the unbeatens closed out the week on field two.

The week’s biggest game, regardless of schedule, was a Sunday showdown between the undefeated rivals of the Community League, Western Legion and Advanced Auto/Tebb’s. Both teams are perennial final four teams in the season ending tournament and always match up well.

The chase for playoff positions began in earnest this week as the Community and Burt Smith Leagues played week seven games while the Jim Korpela League completed week eight. With the top four teams from each league earning an automatic spot in the post-season RMSA tourney, teams in the middle of the pack stated their case for inclusion in the tournament.

RMSA played a truncated schedule in week five due to the Memorial Day holiday. The Monday Burt Smith League had the week off, while the Sunday Community League made up games from the snowy May 9 weekend.
