Walk-off hit ends Burt Smith League softball battle

Winter’s return appearance in Central New York this past weekend forced the postponement of the entire Community League slate on Sunday. Those games will be made up on May 30.

In Monday night’s Burt Smith League, Bostwick Liquors and the Sons engaged in a thriller in the middle game on Field 2. Bostwick’s took an early 3-0 lead heading into the fourth inning. A Jason Siderine single led off the Sons’ fourth, kick-starting a rally that was highlighted by Sean Dunn’s home run. The Sons scored four to take the lead, but Bostwick’s scored three more in their half of the inning. With the game tied heading into the last inning, the Sons tallied four runs to take a one-run lead that would prove to be short-lived. Bostwick’s mounted a rally in their last at-bat, capped off by Aaron Breault’s walk-off liner over the left fielder’s head. Bostwick’s walked away with a 12-11 victory for their first win of the season. The Sons remain winless on the young season.

Other Monday action saw Performance Wire continue their winning ways, handing Bucky’s their first loss of the season 14-6. Greg Keller, Kris Wutsch and Pete Summa all had three hits for Performance in the win. Eugene Cappocia had three hits, including a double, in the loss for Bucky’s.

Thursday’s Korpela League ended with fireworks in the Hideaway Pub/Boys From Italy-The Mill matchup. Trailing much of the game, The Mill posted eight runs in the top half of the sixth inning to take a four-run lead. Eric Knutti and Chris Carletta hit back-to-back extra base hits to spur The Mill’s rally. Knutti and Norm Baldomir also contributed home runs earlier in the game for The Mill.

Hideaway/Boys scored three in their final at-bat, ending the game on a 6-4-3 double play with David Rienzo Jr. stranded on third base after a RBI triple. The Mill walked away with a 17-16 victory and a share of the early lead in the Korpela League standings. David Rienzo III finished a perfect 4-for-4 on the night with a grand slam home run in the fourth inning to pace the Hideaway/Boys offense. Ryan Waterman also collected four hits in defeat.
